Acquire or Build? The Answer Is Both.

Should you acquire or build a business? Here's the information you need to make an informed decision.

Expansion is one of the biggest decisions you'll make in the security business, and too many operators think they have to choose one lane: acquire or build.

I don't see it that way.

On a recent episode of the Entry & Exit podcast, Stephen and I broke down greenfielding versus acquisition. My biggest takeaway is that the best operators learn how to do both.

Watch this video on how one home service company turned six greenfield locations into a nationwide engine doing $170M+ run-rate.

Here’s what matters:

  • Acquisitions give you a running start. When you buy an existing company, you inherit customers, revenue, technicians, and infrastructure. You're stepping into momentum instead of starting from zero. If you're the kind of operator who likes improving systems, acquisitions can be a strong path.
  • Greenfield gives you a clean slate. There's real value in building from scratch — no legacy culture, no broken processes, no outdated tech stack. You create the DNA of the business from day one, and that alignment happens much faster.
  • Greenfield only works with a playbook. Never expand into a new market without a clear operating plan. Sales, hiring, dispatch, service delivery, customer experience…every piece matters. You need a repeatable process before you scale it.
  • Test your playbook close to home first. Greenfield inside your own market before going elsewhere. Launch lean. Open a small office. Run targeted marketing. Build systems in a controlled environment before spending real dollars in a new city.
  • Stay lean as long as possible. Too many operators overbuild too early. You don't need the big office or the full overhead on day one. Keep commitments low, build recurring revenue, and let demand justify the next investment.

Operators with the most flexibility usually win. If you know how to acquire and how to build, you're never dependent on a single path to growth.
